DOMESTIC TRANSFORMER

Domestic Transformer is Gary Chang's continued experiment in extreme conditions of compact space - now a global phenomenon in hyper density and urbanized environments. Unavoidably, it is also a biographical account of his domestic life from childhood until now - a testimony to the changes in his family, lifestyle and design vocabularies. Five significant stages have been singled out, coded M-1976, M-1988, M-1989, M-1998, and M-2007. Though they appeared immensely divergent, they share a common theme: interactively putting all the essential and unexpected activities into this compact 32m2 space without compromising living standards. Design components play 'hide and seek' with each other and with the inhabitant for optimised convenience and efficiency.

H18

This 18 m2 studio flat prototype is designed with time-based transformation in mind. Inhabitants are able to experience a spacious living condition receding from any claustrophobic preconceptions, while providing all daily necessities and amenities without compromising the quality of living. By careful design consideration of space, time and material for the optimal spatial arrangement, multiple scenarios could be choreographed to suit the human behavioural pattern at different durations of the day.
